Located in the royal city of Kandy, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) houses one of Buddhism’s most revered relics — a tooth of Lord Buddha. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a blend of spirituality, culture, and history, drawing thousands of pilgrims and travelers from around the world.
The relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD and has been safeguarded by kings and rulers for centuries. The temple itself was built in the 17th century during the reign of King Vimaladharmasuriya I, making it a key site in both Sri Lankan history and Buddhist worship.
Dress conservatively with covered shoulders and knees. Footwear must be removed before entering the temple premises. Avoid loud conversations and always move respectfully during religious ceremonies.
